Programme structure

Term One

In Term One (September – December) you will look at photography both critically and technically, exploring and challenging the established parameters of commercial photography.

Group tutorials will invite debate and provide a platform for you to critique theory and practice and also consider the entrepreneurial possibilities within photography. A seminar series will examine the contextual dialogues surrounding commercial photography leading to the production of the contextual essay in the first ten weeks of the course.

Production workshops will help you to develop your existing photography skills and support the development of your project.

Term Two

At the start of Term Two (January) you will choose to specialise in one of the following areas:

Portraiture and fashion; high definition digital studio techniques and fashion photography.
Applied; applied studio photography, digital landscape, heritage and museum photography.
Documentary; sports and events, and multimedia platforms for storytelling.
Once you have identified your chosen specialism you will be supported by appropriate tutors and workshops. You will spend this term producing you own specialised portfolio in preparation for employment. At the end of Term Two (April) you will take part in a public exhibition of your work to date.

During this term you will also have the opportunity to go on a study visit to at least one photographic archive, along with MA Photography students.

Term Three

In Term 3 you will undertake an assessed work-based placement or a live / self-initiated work-based project. This should be relevant to your chosen area of specialism and based upon your Learning Agreement.

You’ll receive support from course staff and the University’s Employability Team to help you identify and secure an appropriate placement or live project. During this time your learning will mainly be independent, supported by your academic tutor and access to learning resources.

At the end of the course you will present your photographic work. This could take the form of a publication, a series of prints as an exhibition, or work published online; whatever you do it must connect with your career aspirations.

Students from this course may become; photographic assistants including digital specialists; museum photographers; portrait photographers; fashion photographers; commercial and staff photographers; and multiplatform photojournalists.
